To support and advocate for policy compliance, parent bodies should:

  • Contribute to the school written policy (sample template available here) and canteen committee if your school has one.
  • Support canteen managers to complete relevant training (see list here).
  • Seek advice about running a viable canteen from Foodcore and WACSSO.
  • Coordinate and participate in a canteen/parent body committee to:
  1. Support the canteen staff with professional development and regular communication.
  2. Support other school community programs e.g., implementing complimentary healthy eating programs.
  3. Ensure healthy choices are included in class celebrations & and school fundraisers.

Parents and Citizens’ (P&C) Association fundraising initiatives are exempt from the requirements of the Department of Education’s Student Health in Public Schools procedures, Appendix B. Healthy Food and Drink, however, practices consistent with the promotion of healthy eating are strongly encouraged.

Therefore, parent body’s are encouraged to:

  • Promote healthy fundraising initiatives e.g., sunblock, fruit or vegetable seeds, sporting equipment, student art.
  • Offer a variety of healthy food and drink choices at events e.g., plain popcorn at discoes, reduced fat sausages at fetes, bottled water at sports carnivals.
